Chosen Genre

Our groups chosen genre is 'Alternative Rock'. We came to this decision fairly easily however before we did we were considering doing alternative music but we decided to do alternative rock instead because we felt that there would be more artists/songs we could use.

Forms and conventions of Alternative Rock-

Shot Types- Many shots are used during alternative rock videos especially on the band members, shots include

  • Close ups of band members and their instruments
  • Long shots of the band
  • Hand held shots
  • POV shots

Lighting- Usually natural and low key lighting. This allows videos to be set in locations such as alleyways, dark rooms etc.

Makeup- Can be used to draw more attention to the performance or can be used on the characters in the video if the attention is more needed in the narrative part of the video.

Props- Props which are used are usually the bands electrical equipment ( guitars, drum kits, microphones, amps etc.)

Setting- Alternative Rock videos are usually set in quite grungy areas of cities, run down buildings, small stages, underground areas.

Iconography- Alternative Rock is normally represented through the band themselves in their videos as a large portion of their videos are performance based.

Narrative- Narratives in most alternative rock videos are usually based on messages such as bad pasts/ pain/ suffering/ generally negative issues which all usually end in a good way.
