Advanced Research- Costumes& Props

This is a real time board we made of inspirations we have for different costumes and props we will be using in our music video. It is full of costumes and props which are commonly seen in alternative rock music videos and are often wore by musicians of that genre.

Set Designs

These are set design drawings which me and Molly drew. The first one shows the band plaing in the barn with fairy lights behind them and the second one shows them playing in the woods with fairy lights wrapped around the trees which will be our main location for the video.

Paramore 'CrushCrushCrush'

This is a link to Paramores song 'CrushCrushCrush'. I think this would be a good video to get inspiration for different shot types from as throughout the video there are lots of different shots and camera distances used. For example the have close up shots of Hayley while she is singing. There are also tracking and long distance shots to show the whole band playing. As the song goes on it gets faster which parralells the increasing speed of the editing pace.

Pitch 7- feedback

After presenting our pitch we were told to improve it we need to think of a small narrative to put in the video to keep it from being boring. We were also told that we need to design a practice website which will represent what ours will look like. We have now done that and used images of Paramore as we are doing a Paramore song for our video and we also didn't have any of our own images to use. We were also told that we need to plan our costumes more as we didn't really have much ideas of what our actors  would wear during the video.

Pitch 6- Chosen Song

Our chosen song is 'Now' by Paramore

This is the music video for our chosen song-

The lyrics for our chosen song are-

Dont try to take this from me,
Dont try to take this from me,
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow.
Dont try to take this from me,
Dont try to take this from me,
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow.

Feels like Im waking from the dead,
And everyones been waiting on me.
At least now I never have to wonder,
What its like to sleep a year away.
But werent we indestructible?
I thought that we could brave it all.
I never thought that what would take me out,
Was hiding down below.

Lost the battle, win the war!
Im bringing my sinking ship back to the shore.
Starting over, head back in!
Theres a time and a place to die,
But this aint it.

If theres a future we want it
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow!
If theres a future we want it
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow!
If theres a future we want it
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow!
If theres a future we want it
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow!

Dont try to take this from me,
Dont try to take this from me,
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow.
Dont try to take this from me,
Dont try to take this from me,
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow.

Wish I could find a crystal ball,
For the days I feel completely worthless.
You know Id use it all for good;
I would not take it for granted.
Instead Id have some memories,
For the days I don't feel anything.
At least they will remind me not to make the same mistakes again.

Lost the battle, win the war!
Im bringing my sinking ship back to the shore.
Starting over, head back in!
Theres a time and a place to die,
But this aint it.

If theres a future we want it
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow!
If theres a future we want it
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow!
If theres a future we want it
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow!
If theres a future we want it
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow!

Ooh
Theres a time and a place to die,
Theres a time and a place to die,
And this aint it.
Theres a time and a place to die,
And this aint it.
This aint it!
This aint it!
Theres a time and a place to die,
Theres a time and a place to die,
And this aint it,
iiiiiiiit!

If theres a future we want it
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow!
If theres a future we want it
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow!
If theres a future we want it
Na-ah-ah-ow!
If theres a future we want it
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow!
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow!
Na-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ow!

Pitch Post 4- Locations

These are photos of Gilling woods which is where we are going to film most of our music video. The shots we will be filming hereare the ones of the whole band playing as well as each member playing/singing individually.

This is a photo of the barn which we will also be filming in. We will be filming less footage in here.

Pitch Post 3- Prelim Digipak

This is our Prelim digipak which Christian made on Photoshop. We based the design (colours, fronts) of it on other digipaks from the genre. Our real digipak will have sic panels instead of four. These will include the same as this one as well as two pages of exclusive photos of the band.

Pitch Post 2- Music Video Synopsis

Our music video is going to be mainly performance based. Most of it is going to be footage of our band playing in the wood both during the day and during the night. We are also going to have shots of our lead female singer walking through the woods singing. We are also going to film the band riding bikes through the woods and along a road at night, while the singer leads them and sings. Towards the end of the song, when it is night time we are going to have a shot of one of the drums with a light underneath it and powder paint on top so when it is hit all the powder fly’s up into the air. Throughout the video we will have various shots of each member individually playing their instrument/singing as well as shots of them all performing as a group.

Pitch Post 1- Letter To Music Label

Dear Fueled By Ramen, Warner Music Group,

We are writing to ask permission to use the song Now by Paramore to create a non-profit music video for our A2 Media Studies coursework. It will purely be for educational purposes but will be made public for a short amount of time for examination purposes. We chose this song because we believe it is the best song for us to reach our highest potential grades.

Thank you for your time.

Kind regards, Molly Wade, Michael Owens, Christian Potter.

Target Audience

I asked five people about alternative rock music videos and what they like/dislike about them. This is what they said.

Holly Cummings- they're usually fast paced and interesting and they usually have some sort of story or meaning behind them (like fall out boy with the chronicles thingy) which is rad. and i dislike that they are sometimes too dark or have gore in.

Freya Mawhinney- I really like music videos that have the actual band in them because I think it's more appealing to me to see the band rather than like a progressional story through a video. I also really like videos that are quite funny and upbeat like ain't it fun. I dislike that in some music videos women's bodies are over exposed, I think it's very sexist. I also dislike really depressing music videos because I think it has an impact on the way you analyse the lyrics and Then think of that band as a whole.

Clara Wade- I like that they aren't as cheesy as other genres of music. I also like that they aren't all about love stories and if they are about love stories there is often some kind of twist on them which makes them different. What I don't like about them is that quite a lot of them have dark themes and can portray the genre in quite a negative way.

Zach Trueman-Daniels- well i like costumes that they have, the mise-en-scene of the videos. i dislike that some times there are repetitive shots throughout the video as they can get quite boring.

Caitlin Small- I like that they stand out against the mainstream charts videos with their individualism and unique ideas, and I dislike that some artists take their videos too far to stand out, showing degradation of fellow human beings and grotesque mutilation.

Inspiration Genre Research

You Me At Six- Loverboy

Throughout this music video there are multiple close up shots of members of the band playing guitar. This fits into the forms and conventions of alternative rock because this is something which is often seen throughout music videos in that genre. These shots have helped me with ideas for our music video because it has shown me that to make our video fit into the genre we need to include several
shots of our guitarist playing the guitar.
This shot fits into the genre in several different ways. The first is the dim lighting which has been used in it. This is again something which is used in a lot in alternative rock videos. However I don't think we will be using this in our own video as at the moment we are planning on setting it outside. The second thing which makes this fit into the generic conventions is the narrative. Throughout the video each member of You Me At Six are shown handcuffed and are being interrogated by the police. This fits into the genre of music videos because it shows them in a bad situation however one thing which makes it differ from others is the fact that there is no equilibrium made at the end of the video.
This shot of the whole band is probably one of the shots which makes the video follow the forms and conventions the most. This is because it is a shot which is probably the most common shot you will see in alternative rock music video. It also uses very dim lighting which is also used a lot in music videos of this genre, This is a shot that we are defiantly going to use in our music video as it will show our viewers that our band is alternative rock because it will allow them to easily see their whole image (costume, instruments, performance).

Paramore- Monster

This video features close up shots of each member of the group. This makes the video follow the forms and conventions of the genre because not only is it something which runs through a lot of rock videos but it also shows the audience how the artists look and their image. For example it shows Hayley Williams as having quite alternative  hair and quite defined makeup. This is something which is quite often seen as something which fits into our genre.

These shots show that the music video is set in an old, destroyed hospital. This kind of setting is defiantly something which would be associated with an Alternative Rock video because it is dark and grungy which is a generic convention of the genre. It also gives an idea to the narrative and shows the audience that the band are in some kind of trouble because they are in an abandoned hospital and separated from each other. This is a kind of narrative which wouldn't usually be seen in music videos for other genres of music as it is quite dark and unhappy. The third shot show that things are starting to blow up around Taylor. This is another part of the narrative which fits into the genre because it suggests to the audience that perhaps the band aren't going to be ok and might not make it out of the hospital. This theme also fits into the generic conventions because it is quite a dark theme which is something that is often seen in alternative rock videos.

This shot shows the whole band performing together which is a shot that we will be using during our video.

Chosen Genre

Our groups chosen genre is 'Alternative Rock'. We came to this decision fairly easily however before we did we were considering doing alternative music but we decided to do alternative rock instead because we felt that there would be more artists/songs we could use.

Forms and conventions of Alternative Rock-

Shot Types- Many shots are used during alternative rock videos especially on the band members, shots include

  • Close ups of band members and their instruments
  • Long shots of the band
  • Hand held shots
  • POV shots

Lighting- Usually natural and low key lighting. This allows videos to be set in locations such as alleyways, dark rooms etc.

Makeup- Can be used to draw more attention to the performance or can be used on the characters in the video if the attention is more needed in the narrative part of the video.

Props- Props which are used are usually the bands electrical equipment ( guitars, drum kits, microphones, amps etc.)

Setting- Alternative Rock videos are usually set in quite grungy areas of cities, run down buildings, small stages, underground areas.

Iconography- Alternative Rock is normally represented through the band themselves in their videos as a large portion of their videos are performance based.

Narrative- Narratives in most alternative rock videos are usually based on messages such as bad pasts/ pain/ suffering/ generally negative issues which all usually end in a good way.

Website Skills Development

My Website

I think my website is quite successful because it contains vital things a website would need such as information about upcoming tours and it enables fans to buy music. I also think it is successful because it contains images of the band which is something which a lot of real band websites seem to do. I think that to improve it I could include more varied photos of the band instead of just ones of them at one gig. I think that it would also be improved if I included a merch shop so fans could buy merch as well of music instead of just music. I also think that to make it seem more professional it needs to include a contact page as all the band websites if have looked at include one. By creating this website i have developed a basic understanding of how to use Wix, which will help me when I come to making the real website.

Band Websites

Bruno Mars

The first thing you see when you click onto the website is Bruno Mars' latest news. By doing this the fans are made away of what is going on with his music and can easily find if anything exciting has happened or is coming up with him and his music. The website also has a side bar which gives links to other pages on the website such as tour dates and his music. By including this feature it is easier for fans to navigate around the website. It also makes it a lot easier to find out what the website actually offers. It also allows you to download music straight from the website. This again makes the experience much easier for fans. It also means they are able to download the song if they don't have an iTunes account. It also allows you to sign up so that you receive emails about news, and offers on the website. The website is fairly interactive, it has different links you can click on to take you to other pages, there is a link to sign up to receive information about his tour. The side bar also includes link to Bruno Mars' Social media sites (facebook, twitter, youtube etc.). I don't really think that the website does signify Bruno's genre because it doesn't really look like a website you'd expect to see from a 'pop' artist. I think this because there aren't any bright colours on it which is one of the generic conventions from pop genre. I also think this because the website isn't as easy to navigate as other pop websites and also has quite a grown up look about it which is something you don't really see on pop websites because pop artists target audience are usually kids/teenagers.

One Direction

The One Direction website has a lot more features then the Bruno Mars one. At the top of the page there are 16 links to different pages, including a tour tracker, lyrics, photos and a merch store. By including all these features they have made the website a lot more entertaining as there is a lot more to do on it. It also makes it a better website for fans as it means they can easily find out about the band, look at photos of them and but there merchandise as well as much more. Another feature the website includes is links to all of One Directions social media sites such as Spotify, Twitter and Sound cloud. This again makes it easy for fans to follow the band on various sites and find out any news about them, as well as making it easier for them to listen to their music. The only interactivity on the site is links to other pages and videos of the band which you can watch. However there is a link which tells fans about an app called 'Zappar'. This app allows fans to find out where the band are going on their stadium tour and they are also able to share their experience of the tour on it. I think that the first appearance of the website doesn't really show the bands genre very well as the home page uses mainly dark colours (red and black) and also the photo of the band which is used could present them as less of a pop band and more a rock band as they are all wearing clothes which are seen to fit into that genre (black jeans, white t shirts) they are also all looking away from the camera in the photo which again takes away their genre. However as you click through the site it becomes more clear that their genre is pop. This is because the colours become much lighter and fit into the generic conventions of the genre better. There are also more photos of them all joking around together and showing themselves to be a boy band. The merch store also helps to represent them as a poppy boy band because of the things they sell. For example they sell mugs with there faces on which you can get personalised. I think this presents them as a pop band because it suggests that they are more interested in the commercialisation and branding of their group then they are about making music, which is something which is seen a lot in pop music.

You Me At Six

Before you even enter the website an advertisement comes up about their tour with All Time Low in 2015. This makes fans aware of the tour and also makes it easier to go onto the tickets page. This website also features links to different areas of the site. One of the biggest differences between this website and the other two is the photos. On the One Direction and Bruno Mars websites the images are mainly photos of the artists and their lives and appearances in magazines however most of the ones on the You Me At Six website are live photos or photos containing tour dates. This allows fans to see what kind of experience they would have if they went to see them live and also makes it easy for them to find out when the bands tour dates are. It allows fans to sign up for a newsletter, meaning that they will be emailed any news about the band. There is also a merch store which features new merch as well as old merch for the longer time fans. When you click onto the merch link it brings up and advertisement for their new special edition version of their latest album. It also offers a bundle which contains the special edition album and tour tickets. I think this website is the one which shows the artists genre best. I think this because the colours which are used throughout the whole website are a generic convention of the genre and fit into it. Also the images which are used of the band throughout the website fit into the genre as the set up of them and the clothes which the band are wearing in them are what you would expect of photos from a pop punk genre. I also think that the merch which the band sell fit into to genre as it is all quite 'different' and a designed in a way you would again expect from a band of their genre.

Digipaks

A digipak is a 6 page insert which goes into a CD case. The digipak includes a slot for the CD, 3 pages of photographs of lyrics, a track listing and a front cover for the album. A digipak is used to encourage people to but the real CD rather then downloading it. It encourages people to but it because it gives the buyers a more aesthetic experience. They will also gain things like exclusive artwork/photographs. It is also used to promote the band/artists identity. It represents them in a particular way and also helps to promote what kind of genre the artist is.
This digipak portrays the bands genre as pop as the cover features a boy band who are all having fun and smiling on the cover. Their identity is created by showing them as being fun which is shown through their location and because they are all laughing. Because they create a direct address with the audience by looking t the camera it also suggests that they are more concerned with their image and with making a connection with the audience then they are about music. The digipak suggests that the bands target audience is teenagers and mainly girls. This is suggested through the use of soft colours, the location and the fact that it is a boy band.
The audience for this band would be much different then the audience for One Direction. This is shown because of the difference in colours; the colours on this digipak are mainly black and white which  suggests that the bands target audience would be older and that their music genre is more Rock. The identity of this band is created by the band not making a direct address with the audience and also the clothes the band are wearing which are stereotypically rock clothes. The fact that they aren't looking directly to the camera suggests that the band are more interested in making music then their identity and they don't want to conform to societies ideas of music.
Because of the bright colours and pink which have been used on this digipak it suggests that Katy Perry's target audience is mainly teenage girls however she is also using her sexuality to her advantage by wearing revealing clothes which could also attract a male audience to her music. Because she has used pink on the album cover it shows that she os retaining her femininity however because she is also wearing blue and because the album name is written in blue which is generally seen as a boy colour it shows that she is trying to liberate women through her music.
